How to Back Up Your Seed Phrase Safely

Your seed phrase, usually twelve or twenty-four words, is the master backup for your wallet. Anyone who has it can access your funds, and if you lose it without a backup, your funds may be gone for good. Storing it safely is one of the most important habits in crypto.

The core principle is to keep it offline. Writing the words on paper, or engraving them on metal for durability, avoids the risk of a hacker reaching a digital copy. Many people keep more than one copy in separate secure locations, so a single fire, flood, or loss does not wipe out access.

Just as important is what to avoid. Do not photograph your phrase, store it in cloud notes or email, or type it into any website except when restoring your own wallet. Checking the words are recorded accurately, in the right order, protects you from a backup that fails when you actually need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store my seed phrase on my phone or computer?

It is strongly discouraged. Digital copies can be reached by malware or hackers. Keeping the phrase offline, on paper or metal, is far safer.

Should I keep more than one copy of my seed phrase?

Many people keep two or more copies in separate secure locations. This protects against a single event, like a fire or loss, destroying your only backup.
