It wasn't a technical failure. Nobody had ever explained to me what a recovery phrase actually is, or that no legitimate service will ever ask for it.
Afterwards I looked for material that started at the beginning. Most of it assumed I already knew the vocabulary, or came from someone with a platform to sell.
