A pig butchering scam is a patient, emotional con, and understanding its shape is the best defence against it.
It rarely starts with money. It begins with a wrong-number text, a friendly message, or a match on a dating app. The scammer invests weeks building trust, warmth, and often romance. Only once you feel a real connection do they mention how well they are doing with a crypto investment, and offer to guide you.
The platform they steer you to is fake. Early small deposits appear to grow, which builds confidence and encourages a larger one. When you try to withdraw a big balance, there are sudden fees, taxes, or excuses, and eventually the person and the money vanish.
The warning signs are the pattern itself: a new online contact, a growing personal bond, and then investment guidance. Any of those alone is fine. All three together deserve real caution, no matter how genuine the person feels.
